The Shiite and Sunni are the largest sects of Islam. What are the differences between the two? Why does Islam have sects?

The only difference between Sunni and Shiites is that Sunnin believes in 4 caliphs (Mohammed’s successors). They recognize the heirs of the four caliphs as genuine religious leaders. These heirs ruled constantly in the Arab world until the break-up of the Ottoman Empire following the end of the First World War. While Shiites believe that the only heirs of the fourth caliph is Ali- the above-board successors of Mohammed.
