I've sent texts from the Yahoo Messenger but from what I know, the person you will be sending a text to should have their cellphone number connected with their Yahoo Messenger. Yes, this is really a h*le but this will ensure the makers of the Yahoo Messenger that they will be using the software even if they are on their phone.
