As far as I know, a placebo effect is an improvement in health which is not being attributed to any medication. A placebo (sugar in the form of pills) is usually given to a person who is suspected of having a psychosomatic illness - it means that the things he is feeling is just in his head.

A placebo is a simulated or otherwise medically ineffectual treatment for a disease or other medical condition it the measurable, observable, or felt improvement in health or behavior not attributable to a medication or invasive treatment.
