Is it true that the Roman Catholic churches were required in Spanish colonies in the 18th century? Why so? Is Spain a Catholic country?

Yes, it is true. During that time, Spain was a Roman Catholic country. It is the official religion of the country and I think the subjects were required by the king to convert.

Countries that have been colonized by Spain are required to have churches. The subjects were forced to convert and they need churches to be able to celebrate m* and other rituals for their new converts.
