That’s right. It’s figurative speech and since the Bible is rich in metaphors, purgatory refers to hardships, disease, poverty and all human ills. It’s not an actual geographical place. It means a place where one can suffer to be released from sins and be welcomed into the heavenly kingdom.

The best leaders of the country are the products of social conditions during their times. They succeed because they were able to handle the challenges well and with the talent or skills, they were also able to overcome those issues. I think a good leader is someone who has a good balance of skill and talent, who can put these into good use to attain his goals.
